AI agents for accounting and CPA firms: a job-by-job guide with prices (2026)

Most "AI agents for accounting" articles are written by a vendor about its own product, or about corporate finance teams. This guide is for accounting and bookkeeping firms: practices that serve many clients. It's organised by the job you want done, with prices as each vendor states them and the ledger and practice-software integrations named on their sites.

What counts as an "AI agent" here

We use the term loosely, the way vendors do: software that takes a multi-step job (categorizing a month of transactions, preparing a reconciliation, chasing a client for statements) and does most of it, leaving a person to review. Some products are full agents (Basis, Truewind, Fieldguide). Others are established tools that added AI features (Karbon, Canopy, Dext). Both are listed, because firms buy both.

AI agents by job

1. Bookkeeping and transaction categorization

Booke AI says its AI Bookkeeper "works inside QuickBooks Online and Xero to review bank feeds, categorize transactions, match documents, prepare reconciliation", at $129 per business per month. Botkeeper describes itself as "purpose-built for accounting firms" and prices per license. Uncat focuses narrowly on cleaning up uncategorized transactions with clients and syncing to QuickBooks and Xero. Digits is an AI-native ledger used by accountants and business owners. More in our AI for bookkeeping list.

2. Collecting documents from clients

Chasing clients for statements and receipts is one of the most common complaints in small firms. Content Snare is built for gathering documents and information from clients. It names Xero, Karbon, TaxDome and Google Drive among its integrations, and lists plans from $35/month billed annually. Practice management suites (Karbon, Canopy, Financial Cents) also include client requests and portals.

3. Receipt and invoice capture

Dext targets "small businesses and accounting & bookkeeping firms" and names QuickBooks, Xero and Sage. We found no public pricing page.

4. Month-end close and GL work

Truewind says its agents convert source data into GL-ready entries "helping accounting teams close faster with stronger controls". Basis says top firms use it across CAS, tax and audit, and its site has a "Run a smaller firm?" section. Neither publishes pricing.

5. Tax preparation and research

Black Ore sells "Tax Autopilot" for tax preparation and says its infrastructure is designed for enterprise CPA firms. Blue J is a tax research tool with a published individual plan of $1,498 per user per year.

6. Audit

Fieldguide calls itself "the agentic AI platform for audit and advisory firms", with "Field Agents" for planning, testing and review. No public price.

7. Practice management, proposals and reporting

Karbon (Team $59/user/month annual), Canopy ($74-$149/user/month annual) and Financial Cents (Solo $19/month annual) run workflow and client management. Ignition automates proposals and billing. Fathom covers management reporting.

For CPA firms specifically

"AI for CPA firms" searches mostly come from small and mid-size US practices. The vendors above that say they target CPA firms include Basis (CAS, tax and audit), Black Ore ("designed for enterprise CPA firms"), Fieldguide (audit and advisory firms) and Blue J (tax research, from sole practitioners to firms). The AICPA-affiliated CPA.com publishes a build-vs-buy framework and an AI due-diligence guide, which are worth reading before signing any AI contract. For practice management, see our Karbon vs Canopy comparison.

How to pick for a small or mid-size firm

  1. Match your ledger. If your clients are on QuickBooks Online or Xero, start with tools that name them: Booke AI, Uncat, Dext, Digits, Karbon, Canopy and Content Snare all do.
  2. Fix the bottleneck first. If month-end stalls waiting on clients, a document-collection tool may save more time than a categorization agent.
  3. Price per client vs per user. Booke AI prices per business and Digits by plan. Karbon and Canopy price per user. Model it against your client count and headcount.
  4. Pilot on 3-5 clients. Compare the agent's categorizations and reconciliations with your staff's for one month before rolling out.
  5. Check where data goes. Ask each vendor whether client data trains their models, where it's stored, and what audit trail you get.

Controls, review and client data

Treat every agent as a junior preparer whose work needs review. Keep a person accountable for what goes into the ledger, a return or a client report. Third-party analysis (AIMultiple) points to an "auditability gap" with accounting agents, so prefer tools that log what they changed and why. None of the claims on vendor sites (accuracy rates, hours saved) have been independently verified by us.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an AI agent for accounting?

Yes. Several products describe themselves as AI agents for accounting work. Basis says it "builds AI agents that do real accounting work end-to-end" across CAS, tax and audit. Fieldguide calls itself "the agentic AI platform for audit and advisory firms". Truewind says its agents "convert source financial data into GL-ready entries". Booke AI's AI Bookkeeper works inside QuickBooks Online and Xero to review bank feeds and categorize transactions. They differ a lot in scope, price and the size of firm they target.

What AI do accounting firms use?

It depends on the job. For bookkeeping and transaction categorization: Booke AI, Botkeeper, Digits, Uncat, Dext. For collecting documents from clients: Content Snare. For practice management with AI features: Karbon, Canopy, Financial Cents. For close and GL work: Truewind, Basis. For tax: Black Ore (tax preparation) and Blue J (tax research). For audit: Fieldguide. Many firms combine a practice management tool with one or two job-specific agents.

What are the big 4 AI agents?

The phrase usually refers to the AI agent platforms announced by the Big Four firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG) for their own work and their enterprise clients. Those aren't products a small or mid-size firm can buy off the shelf, so we don't list them. Small and mid-size firms typically buy from the vendors in this guide.

Which LLM is best for accounting?

Most firms shouldn't choose a raw LLM at all. The products in this guide pick and run the models for you and add what a general chatbot lacks: connections to QuickBooks or Xero, audit trails and review steps. If you do use a general-purpose LLM directly, keep client data out of tools that train on your inputs, and have a person review every number before it reaches a client or a return.

What is the best AI tool for CPA firms?

There isn't one best tool, because CPA firms buy AI by job. Common picks by job: Karbon or Canopy (practice management with AI features), Booke AI or Botkeeper (bookkeeping for CAS clients), Content Snare (document collection), Black Ore or Blue J (tax prep and research), Fieldguide (audit). Start with the job that costs your firm the most staff hours. The table above lists prices and integrations.

Is CPA getting replaced by AI?

No vendor we reviewed claims to replace the CPA. They automate preparation work and leave judgment, review and sign-off with licensed professionals. Basis, for example, describes turning "doers into reviewers". The more likely change is fewer hours on data entry and more on review and advisory.

Is there a ChatGPT for accounting?

General chatbots can explain standards or draft emails, but they don't connect to your clients' ledgers. Accounting-specific products (Basis, Truewind, Booke AI, Karbon AI Agents, Canopy Coworker) run models inside accounting workflows, with integrations and review steps. Don't paste client data into tools that may train on it.

How much do AI agents for accounting firms cost?

Published prices vary widely (as stated on official sites, Oct 15, 2026). Booke AI is $129 per business per month. Botkeeper is $149 per license per month on monthly billing for 1-4 licenses. Karbon's Team plan is $59 per user per month billed annually. Canopy is $74-$149 per user per month billed annually. Content Snare is $35-$119 per month billed annually. Blue J's individual plan is $1,498 per user per year. Digits starts at $65/month, and Financial Cents Solo is $19/month billed annually. Uncat, Dext, Basis, Truewind, Fieldguide and Black Ore don't publish prices.

Will AI agents replace accountants?

The vendors themselves position their agents as doing preparation work for humans to review. Basis, for example, says firms use it "to turn their doers into reviewers". Professional judgment, client advice and sign-off still sit with the accountant. Plan for staff to spend more time reviewing and less time preparing.
